An elderly man walking with a cane through a narrow Old Lahore lane, with weathered ochre walls, green windows, tangled overhead wires, and parked motorcycles.

Gali Bootay Shah

A line on the wall reads Gali Bootay Shah. Standing here, I kept thinking of Naseerud Din Shah’s ‘Mirza Ghalib’ TV series from 1988, and a place that came back instantly: ‘Ballimaran Mohalla’ in old Delhi.

Some of my instagram followers from India have told me that my photographs feel like Old Delhi. For a moment, I felt the same while making this frame even though I have never been to India. Just like Lahore has a Delhi Gate (and this gali is not that far away from it), Delhi has a Lahore Gate and perhaps Ballimaran Mohallah isnt that far from it.
