External images and copyrights

Over time some of my notes on external videos have become longer and more detailed. Often I am talking about photographs that inspire me, and the easiest way to explain why they work would be to show the image right there on the page.

As a photographer though, I am very aware of what goes into making a picture. Time on the street, travel, gear, prints, and years of practice. I also know how easily images are copied and shared without permission. Because of this I try to be extra careful about copyrights, especially when it comes to the work of other photographers.

If I find an official Instagram account for the photographer or their foundation, I will sometimes embed the Instagram post instead of uploading the image here. That way the image is shown through their own channel and any views, likes, and comments stay with them on the platform.

Where that is not possible, I will link to the photograph on the photographer’s website, a foundation page, a museum, or another official source, rather than place the image directly inside my note. It is a small compromise, but it lets me respect the photographer’s rights while still pointing you to the work that moved me.

I hope visitors to this site will understand the reason for this choice and will take a moment to click through to see the images in their proper context.
