My Photography Gear

I use a Nikon Z6iii for most things these days. I also own a Nikon Z9 which I mostly use for sports and portraits. It was a want more than a need. More gear adds decisions and slows me down. I also shoot with my mobile phone at times. It works, but it is not an enjoyable experience.

I have quite a few fast primes but modern zooms fit how I work. My everyday lens is the Nikkor Z 24-120 f/4. I keep a 14-30 in the bag when I need it. Between these two I can cover almost anything I want to photograph on the street.

Generally, street photographers prefer 35 mm. That never felt right for me. I shoot a lot of architecture and work in narrow streets so I value the flexibility to go wider or tighter without changing lenses. A wide focal length is important but not always required so instead of carrying multiple prime lenses I opt for a good zoom lens.

I used to carry a drone. I sold it. It was a distraction in the bag and pulled my attention away from the pictures I wanted to make.

There are countless videos about minimal gear. I am also working on switching to a small kit that is easier to carry allowing more time looking than deciding. Modern gear is so capable that almost anyone can make sharp, technically perfect images and AI will only make that easier. What may stand out, are images with character and feeling, even with technical imperfections. That is what I am after.
