Fine art photograph of restored shops and hujras along the outer wall of Masjid Wazir Khan in Lahore, showing three brick arches, faded red and green panels, and an orange “369” shop sign above the central arch.

Shop 369, Masjid Wazir Khan

For this frame I was mainly chasing colour and texture the soft light on the brick, the worn paint on the upper panels, the stains and patched surfaces, and that bright 369 shop sign sitting in the middle.

These arched chambers sit along the outer wall of Masjid Wazir Khan in Lahore. They are part of the row of shops and hujras that were uncovered and restored in recent conservation work around the mosque.

Historically, these lower chambers (hujras) were part of the original mosque complex. Wazir Khan Mosque was designed with rows of shops and rented spaces on its outer sides, and historians believe their income helped fund the upkeep of the mosque as a waqf endowment. Over time, rising ground levels buried many of these hujras; they were excavated and conserved in recent years under projects led by the Walled City of Lahore Authority and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, which also restored the original floor levels around the mosque.
