Roshnai Gate, Lahore
For this frame the focus is texture, rhythm, light and history. Soft angled light brushes across rows of metal studs on a heavy fort door, turning them into repeating shapes with long shadows. Colour is kept out so the photograph can rest on form, contrast and age. This door belongs to Roshnai Gate, the old Gate of Light on the western edge of the walled city of Lahore. For centuries travellers arrived from the river side and passed through here towards Hazuri Bagh and Badshahi Mosque. The rounded studs strengthened the wood and helped protect the entrance from attack, including charges by elephants.
On a wall the print first reads as a simple graphic pattern. Step closer and the dents, scratches and soft wear in the metal and wood begin to show, along with the fine shadows between each stud. It brings a strong link to Lahore into the room and sits easily in both modern and traditional spaces, on its own or alongside other photographs of the city.
