Delhi Gate Bazaar, Lahore

Delhi Gate Bazaar is the part of the Walled City I have visited more than any other in Lahore. When I first started photographing the city, I kept coming back here because the light felt different, softer in the lanes, brighter where it opens up, and always changing as you move. I also photographed this street before the Walled City Authority renovated it. I was apprehensive at first, because renovation projects can sometimes smooth out the character that makes these places feel alive. But here, I am glad they did a very good job, keeping the street functional while respecting its history.

I photographed this shop, Muhammad Younas Tumbaqoo Waley, a few years before the renovation. The owner looked completely at home in that setting, framed by sacks of tobacco and an old weighing scale, like a scene that belonged to another time. Not even a hint of modernity in the frame.
